Peru expands maritime connectivity and infrastructure projects

Peru is experiencing significant advancements in its maritime sector, with four major ports—Callao, Paita, Chancay, and Pisco—improving their global connectivity rankings in the third quarter of 2026. According to the Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (PLSCI), these terminals have seen increased integration with international routes, including new services connecting Asia to the West Coast of Latin America and routes to North America.

In addition to improved connectivity, the country is pursuing major infrastructure developments. A proposed €780 million Corio Port project in the Arequipa region is attracting interest from investors in the United States, China, India, Turkey, and the Netherlands. The project aims to feature a deeper draft than the Port of Chancay to accommodate larger vessels for direct South America-Asia services, potentially serving as a hub for mineral exports like copper.

Furthermore, ProInversión is promoting the ‘Puerta del Pacífico’ project in Callao. This ambitious urban development involves reclaiming approximately 200 hectares of land from the sea to create residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. The project, estimated at roughly US$767 million to US$800 million, is currently in the formulation phase with a tentative completion target of 2029.
