Peru explores mariculture to protect artisanal fishing from El Niño
The Lima Departmental Council of the College of Engineers of Peru (CIP Lima) is proposing technological adaptation and mariculture as strategies to protect the artisanal fishing sector from the El Niño phenomenon and rising sea temperatures. This initiative aims to support approximately 15,000 artisanal fishers in the Lima and Callao regions, who represent about 15.5% of Peru's estimated 95,900 artisanal maritime fishers.
Proposed solutions include the adaptation of fishing gear and the promotion of mariculture—specifically the farming of fish, bivalves, and macroalgae—to diversify production.
In a separate effort to improve industry standards, 25 professionals from Paita, Sullana, and Sechura recently completed specialized training in Paita. Organized by CITEpesquero, Acuícola y Agroindustrial Piura in coordination with the Provincial Municipality of Paita, the training focused on sensory evaluation techniques to identify changes in the quality and acceptability of hydrobiological resources.
