Peru explores new energy alternatives and natural gas potential
Experts and industry leaders in Peru are calling for increased investigation into new energy alternatives and the optimization of existing resources to meet growing global and domestic demand.
Edwin Chavarri, dean of the Colegio de Ingenieros del Perú-Lima, has proposed evaluating natural hydrogen to strengthen national energy security. This initiative aligns with the 2026–2036 Engineering Roadmap, which emphasizes studying the viability, costs, and risks of hydrogen and other sources. While geological processes involving iron-rich rocks or elements like uranium and thorium can generate natural hydrogen, experts note that Peru currently lacks sufficient data to determine its full potential compared to neighbors like Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile.
In the Piura region, there is significant potential to establish a second major gas hub similar to Camisea in Cusco. Although Piura possesses natural gas reserves and existing infrastructure, industry representatives suggest that regulatory and economic barriers currently limit its growth. Expanding residential and industrial consumption, alongside improving pipeline networks to transport gas from northern lots to consumption points, is seen as essential to unlocking the region's energy capacity.
