Peru extends state of emergency in Pataz to combat illegal mining
The Peruvian government has extended the state of emergency in the Pataz province of La Libertad for an additional 60 days, effective October 3, 2026. The measure, formalized via Supreme Decree N° 137-2026-PCM, aims to combat organized crime linked to illegal mining, extortion, kidnapping, and the illegal possession of explosives.
The province has seen significant violence, including 20 murders so far this year. Under the emergency decree, the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru will maintain control over internal order. The decree also includes the restriction of certain constitutional rights, such as freedom of movement, the right to assembly, and the inviolability of the home. Additionally, a mandatory social curfew will remain in effect in the Pataz district from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
Formal mining operations, including the major gold producer Poderosa, have reported infiltration by organized criminal groups that use armed coercion, extortion, and violence to exploit resources and disrupt legal concessions. Upon the conclusion of the emergency period, the Unified Command of Pataz (Cupaz) is required to submit a report on its actions and results to the Ministry of Defense, which will then be elevated to the Presidency and Congress.
