Peru targets copper production doubling by 2030
Peru is positioned for a significant copper production surge, with the potential to double output to 5.4 million tons by 2030. The country currently produces approximately 2.7 million tons annually, ranking as a major global producer. Experts suggest Peru holds more than 50% of the critical minerals required for the global energy transition, including copper, zinc, silver, indium, and tellurium.
In southern Peru, mining has been a major economic driver. Over the last 20 years, the region received S/68 billion in mining royalties and canon, accounting for 52% of the national total. Copper production in the south has tripled during this period, contributing to significant poverty reduction in areas like Moquegua and Tacna.
However, challenges remain. The industry faces a shortage of skilled labor and the need for faster administrative permitting processes. President Keiko Fujimori's administration is under pressure to accelerate project approvals and combat illegal mining to ensure capital remains in the sector. Meanwhile, companies like Aftermath Silver are actively exploring new high-grade mineralization at the Berenguela project to capitalize on rising global demand driven by electric vehicles and data centers.
