Peru faces declining PISA scores in mathematics and reading

Recent results from the OECD’s 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) indicate a decline in educational performance in Peru. The country recorded 382 points in Mathematics and 390 in Reading, representing statistically significant drops of nine and eighteen points, respectively, compared to the 2022 evaluation cycle.

These figures erase previous progress made between 2015 and 2018, placing the nation below its 2015 performance levels. Educational specialist Paul Neira noted that approximately 62% of Peruvian students fail to reach basic proficiency in reading comprehension, while 70% struggle in mathematics.

In response to these challenges, the National Education Plan for 2026–2031 has been introduced. A key component of this plan is a reform of the National Curriculum led by Minister José Antonio Chang, which aims to redefine the approach to historical events and eliminate ideological focuses in favor of scientific rigor and critical thinking.
