Peru faces military modernization delays amid logistics updates
Peru is facing challenges in its military modernization efforts, with former Defense Minister José Luis Gavidia citing a “lack of political will” as a primary obstacle to upgrading equipment. While plans were approved in 2022 to incorporate 24 new combat aircraft and modernize naval and land assets, significant gaps remain. The Army continues to use tanks over 50 years old, and the Air Force struggles to maintain aging aircraft from the 1980s.
In a specific move to maintain current capabilities, the Peruvian Air Force has awarded a contract worth approximately $7.2 million to De Havilland Aircraft of Canada. This contract renews the Performance Based Logistics (PBL) program for its fleet of 12 DHC-6-400 Twin Otter aircraft. This multiannual program ensures a direct relationship with the manufacturer for technical guarantees, spare parts, and maintenance, which has helped maintain an operational rate of 87% to 90% for these aircraft.
