Peru faces rising elderly population amid focus on preventive health

In Peru, the elderly population has surpassed 4 million people, accounting for 12.7% of the national total according to the Ministry of Health. This trend aligns with World Health Organization projections that one in six people globally will be over the age of 60 by 2030.

Medical specialists emphasize that healthy aging requires proactive preventive care to maintain physical, mental, and social autonomy. Because chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and osteoporosis often develop silently, early detection is critical to preventing cardiovascular or renal complications.

Key recommended medical evaluations include regular cardiovascular checks starting at age 30, annual gynecological exams from age 21, and prostate screenings starting at age 45 or 50 depending on family history.
