Peru fines electric motorcycles for using bike lanes

Starting 2 August, Peru will fine riders of electric motorcycles that enter bike lanes. The base penalty for the G32 violation is 550 soles, but fines can rise to 2,750 soles for drivers without a proper licence. Vehicles that exceed 25 km/h must carry a licence plate, a vehicle‑identification card, mandatory accident insurance (SOAT) and a category B‑IIa driving licence; otherwise the fine reaches 660 soles and the vehicle may be impounded.

Elliot Tarazona, president of the Asociación Automotriz del Perú (AAP), said many owners were misinformed about documentation requirements. He urged the Ministry of Transport and Communications to open an extraordinary formalisation process so owners can obtain the necessary registration, plates, SOAT and licences. The Policía Nacional is tasked with enforcing the new rules and can retain non‑compliant vehicles until paperwork is corrected.
