Peru forest fires cause 12 deaths and widespread damage

Forest fires across Peru have resulted in at least 12 deaths and affected more than 830 people, according to the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci). The fatalities are distributed across several regions, including Cusco (4), Cajamarca (3), Apurímac (2), Pasco (2), and Puno (1).

Significant damage has been reported in the departments of Áncash, Apurímac, Cusco, and Junín. In Cusco, the fires have threatened agricultural and livestock livelihoods, affecting over 11,350 hectares. In Ayacucho, 103 fires were recorded in less than 20 days of October, with Huanta and Vilcas Huamán being among the most impacted provinces.

Authorities attribute the rapid spread of the fires to rising temperatures, lack of rainfall, and agricultural burning. While some fires in Cajamarca and Huancavelica are under control, active fires remain in Junín, Apurímac, and Cusco. The National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor) early warning system has reportedly faced technical issues in providing updated figures.
