Peru fruit exports face decline due to El Niño

Peruvian agricultural exports, specifically pomegranates and mangoes, are facing significant threats due to the El Niño weather phenomenon. Rising temperatures are disrupting traditional growing cycles and reducing yields.

Pomegranate producers, including EGA Agroindustrial SAC, anticipate yield reductions of approximately 30 percent. Higher-than-normal temperatures in coastal production areas are preventing the winter chill hours necessary for adequate flowering. To mitigate this, some producers are accelerating agronomic management to bring flowering forward to mid-September or October.

Similarly, the mango sector is experiencing uncertainty. Ángel Gamarra, chairman of Promango, noted that higher minimum temperatures have hindered flowering. Data from the industry association Apem indicates that mango exports dropped from 287,424 tons in 2024–25 to 223,686 tons in 2025–26. Additionally, producers have faced doubling cultivation costs and challenges regarding fruit maturity standards during harvest.
