Latin American agricultural and trade sectors report mixed economic trends

Agricultural and economic trends across Latin America show varying performance in the export and import sectors.

In Chile, the cherry industry is preparing for the 2026/27 season with an expected 16% increase in volume, focusing on early harvests in the Limarí province to secure better prices in Asian markets. Logistics and cold chain management remain critical challenges for these exports.

Ecuador reported strong growth in non-oil exports, which rose 25% in July 2026. Key drivers include shrimp, bananas, and non-traditional products like fish oil and animal feed. Additionally, exports of blueberries, mango, passion fruit, and avocado saw significant increases during the first half of 2026.

In Peru, the ginger sector faces high production levels and low demand, leading to price pressure. Meanwhile, pitahaya exports reached $1.25 million in the first half of 2026, with Spain and the Netherlands serving as primary destinations.

Colombia experienced record-high imports in July 2026, totaling $7.96 billion, driven largely by manufactured goods and fuels. However, the Colombian flower industry is calling for government support to mitigate the impact of a strengthening peso, rising labor costs, and new U.S. tariff conditions.
