Lima and Callao launch transport upgrades and safety measures
The Urban Transport Authority (ATU) and concessionaire Lima Expresa renewed their cooperation to strengthen traffic control on the Vía de Evitamiento, adding electronic monitoring at seven high‑risk points and weekly enforcement operations.
The Peruvian Automotive Association warned that traffic congestion costs the country about S/30 billion annually, citing over 88 000 accidents in 2025 and calling for comprehensive reforms, including modernising public transport and expanding metro lines.
Since its launch in December 2023, the first stage of Metro Line 2 has carried more than 41 million passengers, with the Evitamiento station recording the highest daily ridership.
Cafetal used Metro Line 1 as a platform for a high‑impact branding campaign, installing a fully branded train and offering instant‑coffee tastings to the line’s 600 000 daily commuters.
ATU also completed infrastructure projects linked to the new Line 2 and Line 4 extensions, delivering upgraded entrances, security perimeters and a surveillance base for the San Marcos university campus and the Callao district, benefiting over 70 000 residents.
A digital platform was launched to allow regional and municipal authorities to submit transport operator data for a temporary diesel‑fuel subsidy, aiming to ease the impact of rising fuel prices.
Finally, Lima inaugurated the Nicolás Arriola rapid bypass, an elevated viaduct connecting La Victoria and Ate, designed to separate fast‑through traffic from local streets and improve urban mobility.
