Peru identifies 536 cultural heritage sites at risk from El Niño
The Peruvian Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) have identified 536 critical points of cultural heritage at risk due to the El Niño phenomenon. To mitigate potential damage from heavy rains and flooding, the Ministry has allocated S/ 4 million for preventive measures at historical and archaeological sites.
Minister of Culture Alberto Beingolea emphasized the importance of proactive intervention, citing historical damage to sites like the Caral friezes as a reason to act before emergencies arise. High-risk locations include the Chan Chan citadel in Trujillo, the Kuélap archaeological monument, and the Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary, as well as various sites in the regions of Lambayeque, Piura, La Libertad, and Tumbes.
In addition to funding, the Ministry has established a coordination commission and launched a training program for officials. To date, 180 personnel have received training to assist in disaster risk management and heritage protection.
