Peru holds 2026 regional and municipal elections
Peru is conducting its 2026 regional and municipal elections, with over 26 million citizens eligible to vote for 13,148 authorities. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has prepared 89,935 polling stations and activated its computing system to process the electoral records.
The election day has been marked by several incidents. In Celendín, Cajamarca, voting was suspended at the David Sánchez Infante school following an alleged explosive detonation that caused a fire. Authorities reported no injuries. In the Huánuco region, electoral material and records were burned during the vote count in the districts of Jacas Chico and Cauri, necessitating supplementary elections.
Preliminary results and exit polls show varying trends across the country. In Metropolitan Lima, exit polls from Datum indicate Rafael López Aliaga leads with 31.2%. In the San Martín region, Óscar Cabrera is leading the preliminary count. Some regions, including Amazonas, Áncash, Arequipa, Ica, La Libertad, Lima, Moquegua, Piura, and Tumbes, are expected to head to a second round as no candidate reached the 30% threshold.
Electoral authorities, including the JNE and RENIEC, have called for calm and respect for the democratic process. Meanwhile, RENIEC has flagged irregular voter movement, known as 'voto golondrino,' in three districts of Arequipa.
