Machu Picchu implements new 15-minute ticket purchase limit
The Peruvian Ministry of Culture has overhauled the reservation system for the Machu Picchu UNESCO World Heritage site. Under the new rules on the official 'Tu Boleto' platform, visitors are granted a strict 15-minute window to complete their booking and payment process once tickets are selected. If the transaction is not finalized within this countdown, the reservation is automatically canceled and the tickets are returned to the general sale.
This change aims to ensure that real-time ticket availability on the digital platform accurately reflects the actual inventory available to the public. The ministry has also moved toward a system of exclusively nominative tickets, requiring that the visitor's identification document matches the name on the ticket for entry.
While the booking process has changed, visitor capacity limits remain in place to protect the archaeological site. During high season, the citadel allows up to 5,600 visitors per day, decreasing to 4,500 during the low season. The Inca Trail remains limited to 750 visitors daily.
