Peru's Interior Minister denies support for corrupt police officers

Peruvian Interior Minister César Astudillo has denied that the National Police provide institutional support or a ‘spirit of the corps’ to officers involved in criminal activities. Speaking during a ceremony for retired police officers, Astudillo clarified that institutional solidarity is reserved for retirees, wounded officers, and the families of those killed in the line of duty, rather than ‘those characters who have used our uniform to commit crimes.’

Astudillo announced plans to reform the police disciplinary regime to strengthen sanctions across all levels and emphasized the ongoing reorganization of the National Police toward a unified model with specialized branches.

In a separate security initiative, President of the Council of Ministers Luis Galarreta has formalized the creation of a High-Level Multisectoral Commission to Recover Security and Public Order. This working group, which includes the ministries of Defense, Justice, Foreign Affairs, and the Interior, is tasked with planning strategies to combat organized crime. The commission will operate out of the Army General Headquarters in San Borja and has the authority to convene both public and private sector representatives.
