Peru introduces Protocolo Betania to protect minors in remote areas

The Peruvian Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP), through the Warmi Ñan National Program, has introduced the ‘Protocolo Betania’ to improve the protection of minors who are victims of sexual violence in remote areas.

Presented in Iquitos at the Loreto Superior Court of Justice, the protocol aims to optimize comprehensive care for children and adolescents in geographically isolated sectors. It seeks to overcome logistical hurdles such as transport difficulties, lack of connectivity, and extreme weather conditions to ensure immediate intervention.

The initiative was developed following a case involving two girls, of Peruvian and Ecuadorian nationality, who were victims of human trafficking. That operation revealed coordination gaps and operational limitations that delayed assistance. The new roadmap standardizes alert activations, the logistics of deploying specialized personnel to isolated territories, and the exceptional transfer of victims to urban centers when necessary.
