Peru political developments: legislative powers, ombudsman removal, and regional budget talks

In Peru, several political developments are unfolding involving the executive, legislative, and regional branches. Prime Minister Luis Galarreta has led meetings with parliamentary groups, including Juntos por el Perú, to discuss a package of 66 requested legislative powers. These measures include 14 provisions for citizen security and 25 aimed at preventing El Niño effects. While some lawmakers expressed interest, others, such as Senator Jaime Quito, have questioned the necessity of the request.

Simultaneously, four Senate blocs have filed a formal request for the removal of Ombudsman Josué Gutiérrez. The petition cites serious misconduct, including controversial remarks regarding the potential dissolution of Congress and alleged irregularities in personnel hiring identified by the Comptroller General. The request requires 40 votes in the Senate to proceed.

On the regional level, the National Assembly of Regional Governments (ANGR) met with the Prime Minister to advocate for increased budget allocations to strengthen decentralization. Meanwhile, President Keiko Fujimori is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings during the UN General Assembly, including discussions with the President of Finland regarding education and the Prime Minister of Thailand concerning a pending Free Trade Agreement.
