Peru joins U.S.-led Shield of the Americas security alliance
Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori has announced that Peru will join the Shield of the Americas, a regional security alliance led by the United States to combat transnational organized crime. The announcement followed a meeting in Lima between Fujimori and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The alliance, also known as the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (ACCC), currently includes 15 countries. The initiative focuses on intelligence sharing and military cooperation to dismantle criminal networks that Rubio described as transnational terrorist networks with significant financial and military resources.
Fujimori stated that joining the coalition will allow Peru to obtain intelligence more rapidly and act with greater firmness against criminal groups, while emphasizing that the nation's sovereignty remains intact. During the visit, the Peruvian government awarded Rubio the Order of the Sun, one of the country's highest civilian honors. Rubio characterized the development as the beginning of a 'golden era' in diplomatic relations between Peru and the United States.
