Peru launches Digital Mining Passport to improve mineral traceability

Peruvian mining officials introduced a Digital Mining Passport (PMD), a geolocation‑based digital infrastructure that records each step of a mineral's custody with photos, videos and timestamps. Director Bruno Bellatin explained that the system “geolocaliza a la persona… firma cada paso en la cadena de custodia” and links the mineral to the verified individual handling it. The tool aims to address the shortcomings of the existing Reinfo system and to distinguish legally sourced ore from illegal production, strengthening transparency and formalization in the sector. The PMD will be piloted with interested processing plants and will complement, not replace, current regulatory procedures.

The initiative was presented at a recent mining forum, where Enrique Alania highlighted the need for a reliable traceability solution after years of ineffective formalization efforts. By providing an auditable digital record, the passport seeks to give authorities and buyers verifiable evidence of a mineral’s origin and the identities of participants throughout the supply chain.
