Peru launches major renovations of historic El Ías Aguirre and Bombonera stadiums

Work began on August 3 to restore the El Ías Aguirre stadium in Chiclayo after nearly nine years of closure. The project, declared a national interest by Congress, is funded with about 6 million soles by the Lambayeque regional government under leader Jorge Pérez and will be carried out in stages.

At the same time, the Instituto Peruano del Deporte (IPD) is completing a comprehensive overhaul of the historic "Bombonera" arena inside the Estadio Nacional. The two‑year‑long refurbishment, overseen by IPD president Sergio Ludeña Visalot with Ministry of Education support, adds new seating, full repainting, upgraded restrooms, locker rooms, a modern training zone and new lighting. Both venues are slated to reopen soon, boosting Peru’s sports infrastructure and providing improved facilities for athletes and spectators.
