Peru Libre and Renovación Popular cited for misusing public funds on books
Peru Libre and Renovación Popular have been placed under observation by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) for using direct public financing to produce publications that do not meet the legal criteria for political training, research or ideological development. Peru Libre spent S/31,383 on a collective poem book titled “El amor y la investigación,” including a literary workshop, printing and a teacher’s fee, which ONPE judged to be primarily artistic. Renovación Popular allocated US$6,400 for a digital book “Mi gallo es el chancho,” focusing on the personal biography of party leader Rafael López Aliaga, also deemed outside the permitted scope. The electoral authority highlighted procedural irregularities, such as lack of qualified research experience and insufficient supplier quotations. Both parties say the observations are under evaluation and await ONPE’s final decision.
