Peru mandates use of public and private facilities for 2026 elections

For the 2026 regional and municipal elections in Peru, public and private entities are now legally required to provide their facilities for use as voting locations. This mandate follows the application of Law No. 32594, which modifies the Organic Law of Elections.

Under the new regulation, designated facilities must be available from 4:00 PM two days before the election until 6:00 PM the day after the polls close. Failure to comply with these requirements constitutes an infraction punishable by fines ranging from 50 to 100 tax units (UIT).

The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has published a list of 10,728 potential voting locations, which primarily include educational institutions, community spaces, sports centers, and parish halls. ONPE personnel are currently conducting nationwide verifications of these sites to assess infrastructure conditions and prepare contingency measures for potential risks, such as damage caused by natural phenomena like El Niño.
