Peru Medical College calls for increased health resources amid El Niño risks
The Medical College of Peru (CMP) is calling for an increase in specialized medical personnel and the reinforcement of health services to manage the impact of the El Niño phenomenon. National Dean Pedro Riega stated that health facilities must prepare for a rise in diseases typically associated with the event, including dengue, acute diarrheal diseases, acute respiratory infections, leptospirosis, and skin conditions.
Climate forecasts from ENFEN indicate a high probability of extraordinary magnitude for the phenomenon between September 2026 and January 2027, with temperatures and rainfall expected to exceed normal levels in several regions. The CMP is advocating for the health sector to be included in the National Commission for Risk Management of the El Niño Phenomenon to accelerate decision-making and response efforts.
