Peru Minister Shinno announces new hydroelectric projects

Peru's Minister of Energy and Mines, Guillermo Shinno, has announced the relaunch of a series of bidding processes to encourage private investment in hydroelectric power plants. Speaking at the PECIER-FISE 2026 International Electric Sector Expo in Lima, Shinno noted that the country has not seen investment in hydroelectric generation for over a decade.

The initiative aims to diversify the national energy matrix and ensure the stability of the electrical supply as solar and wind energy production increases. To support this, the government is working to approve pending regulations for the electricity market, including bidding and complementary services regulations, which are expected to be finalized by December.

Luis Santillán, the Vice Minister of Electricity, stated that the sector is projecting a decentralized, reliable, and resilient electrical system with environmental cybersecurity.
