César Astudillo faces motion of censure in Peru's Chamber of Deputies

The Peruvian Chamber of Deputies is set to debate a motion of censure against Interior Minister César Astudillo. The motion, supported by the Juntos por el Perú, Partido Cívico Obras, and Partido del Buen Gobierno benches, cites a lack of leadership and failure to address rising insecurity, specifically following the murder of journalist Susy Aponte Polo.

The proposal has caused significant political friction. Ricardo Belmont, leader of the Obras party, has condemned the move as a betrayal by his own parliamentary members, arguing that a minister should be given at least six months to implement a strategy before facing removal. Conversely, deputy Jaime Abensur has defended Astudillo, noting the Minister has presented a work plan and has successfully dismantled numerous criminal gangs.

Political divisions are also evident within the Ahora Nación party. While leaders like Alfonso López Chau and deputy Harvey Colchado advocate for technical oversight rather than immediate removal, other members, including senators Ruth Luque and Mirtha Vásquez, are demanding Astudillo's immediate resignation. Some legislators have proposed an alternative approach: evaluating Astudillo's management through five specific axes—police purification, criminal investigation, intelligence, equipment, and promotions—until December.
