Peru prepares for El Niño with modular bridges and Japanese cooperation

President Keiko Fujimori has initiated several measures to prepare Peru for the El Niño phenomenon. As part of a domestic prevention strategy, the government is mobilizing 25 metallic modular bridges to high-risk areas, including Piura and Moquegua. This initiative, representing an investment of over S/ 60 million, aims to ensure rapid transit restoration and prevent communities from becoming isolated during emergencies. The Ministry of Transport and Communications is responsible for identifying the most critical locations for these structures.

In addition to domestic infrastructure, President Fujimori met with Tanaka Akihiko, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to strengthen strategic support. JICA expressed its readiness to assist through three cooperation frameworks: prevention and preparation before disasters occur, immediate humanitarian aid implementation, and long-term strategies to minimize casualties and damage. The meeting included the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation.
