Peru promotes tarwi production to support 30,000 families

Peru's Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) is promoting the consumption of tarwi (Lupinus mutabilis), an ancestral Andean legume, to support the livelihoods of over 30,000 producing families.

In 2025, the country harvested 13,900 hectares of tarwi, resulting in a total production of 24,208 metric tons. The primary producing regions include La Libertad (26%), Cusco (25%), and Apurímac (17%), followed by Junín, Huánuco, Puno, and Áncash.

Economic data shows that tarwi exports reached US$ 1,025,000 in 2025, with Ecuador serving as the main international destination. The ministry aims to strengthen the productive chain and increase the value-added potential of the grain through new product development and expanded commercialization.
