Peru prosecutors probe 'La China Yesenia' and gang in deadly Lima arson

Peruvian prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation for qualified homicide against six alleged members of the criminal network “Los Vikingos de Gamarra” after an intentional arson on July 22 killed ten people – five adults and five children – in the Manzanilla II urbanisation of La Victoria, Lima. The attack is linked to a violent dispute over control of informal transport (mototaxis and electric motorcycles) around the Gamarra commercial hub.

Investigators have identified the sisters Yesenia Ureta (known as “La China Yesenia”) and Fabiola Ureta Vargas, along with Miguel Ureta R. (“Nene”), Fabian González, Juan Ayllón (alias “Pimpollo”), and Terry Cariat, as suspects. According to the public ministry, Yesenia and her husband Juan Ayllón ordered the fire after prior threats and surveillance of the victim family. Police have detained Fabiola Ureta Vargas and her partner, and the investigation will include statements, background checks, and phone‑geolocation of the suspects.
