Peru pushes renewable energy investment to cut CO2 emissions

Investment in renewable energy is seen as a key tool for Peru to lower its CO₂ output. Wind power is highlighted as the most efficient source, delivering substantial emissions reductions with minimal operational pollution. Solar and other renewables can also contribute, but their overall impact depends on manufacturing processes, transport and project management. Currently, non‑hydroelectric renewables account for less than 10 % of Peru’s electricity, despite abundant solar radiation in the southern regions of Arequipa, Moquegua, Puno and Tacna. Lessons from Chile and Uruguay suggest that clear policies, stable incentives and long‑term planning can accelerate the transition. Strengthening national strategies, cutting bureaucracy and boosting research could enable Peru to tap its renewable potential and achieve meaningful cuts in greenhouse‑gas emissions.
