Peru ranks lowest in Latin America for corruption reduction and legislative trust
A recent Latinobarómetro report indicates that Peru ranks last in Latin America regarding progress in reducing corruption. The study places the country below Venezuela in this indicator, reflecting widespread citizen perception of institutional deterioration. Furthermore, the report highlights that corruption allegations and convictions do not act as a decisive barrier to presidential elections.
Peru also leads the region in legislative rejection, with 90% of citizens stating they do not feel represented by the Congress of the Republic. This level of discontent surpasses other nations such as Ecuador (88%) and Guatemala (83%). Additionally, Peru and Venezuela are identified as the least efficient states in the region, both receiving a score of 3.6 out of 10 regarding state efficiency.
Public distrust regarding the management of taxes is high, with 89% of Peruvians questioning how the state manages public spending. Former Comptroller General Fuad Khoury described the corruption issue as systemic, affecting the political and ethical structures of the state. Political analyst Iván Lanegra noted that this scenario reflects a fundamental problem affecting both democracy and governance.
