Peru ranks second globally in bird species sightings during October Big Day

Peru has maintained its position as the second country in the world with the highest number of bird species recorded during the October Big Day 2026 event. Participants in the Paracas National Reserve, including researchers and conservationists, reported sightings of 42 species.

A notable highlight of the expedition was the observation of several flocks of Humboldt penguins. These birds appear to have relocated from traditional settlements in Punta San Juan and San Fernando in Marcona to the protected areas of the reserve, likely due to the effects of El Niño.
