Peru records historic heat levels surpassing El Niño benchmarks

Peru has experienced significant temperature spikes, with Senamhi reporting new daytime heat records between August 1 and August 21, 2026. Maximum temperatures in coastal regions such as Piura, Tumbes, La Libertad, Lima, and Tacna have surpassed levels recorded during the El Niño events of 1997, 2016, and 2023.

Notable records include 36.5°C in El Salto, Tumbes, on August 8, and 34.4°C in Callancas, La Libertad, on August 11. In the highlands, Ilave reached 20.6°C on August 9, a temperature not seen in the region for 61 years. In Lima, the Campo de Marte station recorded 28.0°C on August 22, breaking a record set in 1939, while the Alexander Von Humboldt station reached 28.8°C on August 23.

Regional weather forecasts for August 29 indicate varied conditions across the country. Lima is expected to be partially cloudy with a high of 24°C, while Piura and Pucallpa will see higher temperatures reaching 32°C and 35°C respectively. Other regions like Cusco and Huancayo will experience cooler temperatures, with highs of 21°C and 22°C.
