Peru 2026 regional and municipal elections enter final counting phase
The 2026 regional and municipal elections in Peru are entering the final stages of official counting. The National Jury of Elections (JNE) projects that official results for regional and local governments will be available by early November, following a deadline of October 28 for resolving vote recounts and observations.
In Lima, the race for the mayoralty shows extreme parity. As of the latest counts, Renovación Popular leads with approximately 27.7% of the votes, while Avanza País follows closely with 26.8%. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) is currently reviewing approximately 1,924 tally sheets, representing 7.3% of the total in Lima, due to formal inconsistencies.
Regional results show significant developments: Rosalí Leandro Tarazona has emerged as the virtual governor of Huánuco with 31.9% of the vote, securing a first-round victory. In Arequipa, Alfredo Zegarra and Jenry Huisa are set to compete in a second round for the regional government after neither candidate reached the 30% threshold. In Junín, Arnoldo Mallma and Fernando Orihuela will face each other in a runoff scheduled for November 29.
The Ministry of Public Prosecution reported 79 detainees for alleged electoral crimes, including identity theft and illegal alcohol sales, with Cusco recording the highest number of incidents at 12 cases.
