Peru Reopens Inca Trail Route 5 to Machu Picchu Tourists on August 1

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture announced that Route 5 of the Inca Trail network, which leads directly to Machu Picchu, will reopen to both domestic and foreign visitors on 1 August. A multisectoral inspection carried out on 22 July by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP), the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade, Tourism and Handicrafts (GERCETUR) and the Machu Picchu municipal authorities confirmed that the repaired sections meet safety and transit standards.

Restoration work, undertaken by specialized crews, archaeologists and conservators, included stabilising unstable rock, clearing debris, rebuilding stone platforms, reinforcing handrails and clearing vegetation. The project follows a contingency plan developed after heavy rains caused landslides and structural damage earlier in the year. The reopening is expected to restore a key cultural‑tourism circuit in the Cusco region.
