Peru repatriates 342 cultural assets from six countries

Peru has successfully repatriated 342 cultural assets from six different countries, marking the largest single return of heritage items so far this year. The handover ceremony, held at the Palacio de Torre Tagle in Lima, involved the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.

The recovered items originated from Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The collection includes diverse historical and artistic works, such as archaeological pieces, ceramics, textiles, and documents. Notable highlights include the monumental painting ‘El tránsito de San José’ and the manuscript ‘El Arte Antiguo Peruano,’ which is valued for its academic significance and watercolor illustrations.

Foreign Chancellor Carlos Espá attributed the success to institutional coordination between Peruvian diplomatic missions and international agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Department of State, the Argentine Federal Police, and authorities in Belgium and Germany. The official also noted that some items were returned through voluntary actions by foreign citizens.
