Peru reports budget execution delays for rare disease treatments
A study by IPOC Consultores and the Peruvian Federation of Rare Diseases (FEPER) reveals that over S/ 98 million intended for rare and orphan disease treatments remained unspent in public health facilities as of August 2026.
Despite FISSAL transferring 99% of available resources to 85 public health institutions in January 2026, these facilities had only executed 33% of the budget by late August. This delay affects patients requiring specialized medications and therapies, including children with spinal muscular atrophy awaiting coverage at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño in San Borja.
The report, which utilized data from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and FISSAL, also noted that the total 2026 resources of S/ 160.6 million fell S/ 6.9 million short of the estimated needs for these patients.
