Peru reports business growth and projected fiscal deficit compliance
Peru's business landscape showed significant movement in the second quarter of 2026. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), 89,846 companies were created or reactivated, a 1.3% increase compared to the previous year. However, 62,835 companies ceased operations during the same period, representing an 8.1% rise in business closures compared to the second quarter of 2025. Despite these closures, the total number of active companies in the country reached 3.37 million.
On the macroeconomic front, Scotiabank reports that Peru is on track to meet its fiscal deficit target for the second consecutive year. The accumulated fiscal deficit for the 12 months ending in August 2026 stood at 1% of GDP, an improvement from the 2.2% recorded at the end of 2025. Projections suggest the deficit will settle around 1.7% of GDP by the end of 2026, staying within the official 1.8% target. This positive trend is attributed to increased tax revenues driven by domestic demand and high mineral prices, alongside lower-than-expected public investment.
