Peru road projects face safety lawsuits and local protests
Regional councilor César Huamantuma filed a criminal complaint against Arequipa regional governor Rohel Sánchez, alleging that the planned inauguration of the Arequipa–La Joya road on 13 July lacks essential safety measures such as pedestrian bridges, proper signage and interchanges, and could cause traffic accidents. Residents of the Cerro Colorado district warned that children cross the road without signals and fear a rise in accidents.
In the La Libertad region, the Association of Development and Defense of Huanchaco organized a peaceful march demanding that the regional government complete unfinished sections of the Trujillo–Huanchaco corridor before work begins on the Oval of Huanchaco. Protesters cite risks to tourism, local businesses and transport operators, while GORE La Libertad manager Rogger Ruiz said the contractor must fulfill the contract or risk contract cancellation.
