Peru agricultural exports see growth despite El Niño impacts

Peruvian agricultural exports are experiencing significant shifts due to climate patterns and market demand. Between January and July 2026, Peru’s fresh blueberry exports rose 64.8% to US$620.2 million, driven by a 45.1% increase in volume. The United States remains the primary market, accounting for 56% of the total export value, followed by the Netherlands and China.

However, the El Niño phenomenon is impacting production and availability. In the blueberry sector, while early shipments arrived in July, the effects of El Niño are becoming more visible, leading to lower available quantities. This reduction in Peruvian supply, combined with strong demand in the US, may put pressure on European market availability in the coming months.

Similarly, the grape harvest in Piura, Peru, has started 10 to 15 days earlier than expected due to higher-than-normal temperatures caused by El Niño. While fruit quality remains good, grape sizes are slightly below typical levels. The early start suggests the season may also conclude approximately two weeks ahead of its usual schedule.
