The government of Peru, led by President Keiko Fujimori, has announced the formal severance of diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The decision, communicated via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is based on Peru’s commitment to international law, peace, and the defense of democratic values.

Lima cited several key reasons for the rupture, including Iran’s alleged role in escalating violence and conflict in the Middle East. The Peruvian government specifically condemned Iran’s obstruction of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), noting that Tehran has repeatedly denied inspectors access to nuclear facilities, hindering necessary verification processes.

Additionally, Peru expressed deep concern regarding the disruption of international maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz, a situation reported since March 2026. The Ministry also highlighted the deterioration of democracy in Iran, citing United Nations reports on the repression of peaceful protests, censorship of the press, discrimination against women and girls, and the persecution of political opponents.

The formal notification was delivered to Tehran through the Iranian Embassy in Ecuador, which serves as the concurrent mission for Peru. Despite the break in diplomatic ties, Peru confirmed that consular relations will remain intact to protect the interests and citizens of both nations, in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
