Peru telecommunications market expands as 5G infrastructure grows
Peru's telecommunications sector has seen significant growth and technological advancement as of mid-2026. According to OSIPTEL, the country reached 39.64 million active mobile lines in the second quarter of 2026. While the Lima-Callao region accounts for 37.86% of these lines, the remaining regions represent 62.14% of the market. Major operators include Claro with a 33.39% market share, followed by Bitel (24.68%), Entel (22.72%), and Movistar (18.95%). There has been a notable shift toward monthly contract models, which saw an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
Parallel to market growth, 5G infrastructure is expanding rapidly across the country. Following spectrum assignments by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the number of 5G antennas in Peru grew from fewer than 400 in 2021 to over 2,800 by early 2026. This expansion is concentrated in urban centers such as Lima, Callao, Trujillo, Arequipa, and Ica. The deployment of 5G technology is expected to significantly reduce latency, improving the quality and immediacy of live digital transmissions and increasing network capacity for high-density areas.
