Peru and Venezuela conduct multi-hazard disaster preparedness drills

Peru is conducting its III National Multi-Hazard Drill (Simulacro Nacional Multipeligro) on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. Organized by the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), the exercise aims to strengthen public preparedness for various natural and human-induced disasters.

In Lima and Callao, the drill focuses on earthquake response and associated tsunami risks, simulating a high-magnitude seismic event. Other regions are tailoring scenarios to local vulnerabilities, such as heavy rains and flooding in Arequipa, or seismic activity and tsunamis in Tacna. In Juliaca, officials have also highlighted the need for preparedness following recent forest fires.

Simultaneously, in Venezuela, Protección Civil Táchira is conducting its tenth seismic drill in San Cristóbal. This exercise includes road closures in the city center to improve community reaction times and emergency response protocols following previous significant seismic events in the region.
