Peru upgrades regional transport with Puno bus terminal reopening and Ayacucho airport international status

The municipal government of Puno announced that the long‑inactive Terminal Zonal Norte will reopen on 15 July. Deputy mayor César Villasante described the facility as “practically an elephant white” and said the terminal is now fully ready for inter‑urban transport operators.

Separately, the Ministry of Transport and Communications has officially designated the main terminal in Ayacucho as an international airport, backed by more than US$10 million in upgrades. Regional tourism chamber president Alejandro Mancilla praised the move as a long‑sought breakthrough that will boost connectivity, tourism and private investment in the southern highlands. Planned improvements include a 7 km perimeter fence, LED lighting, advanced video surveillance and runway beacon lights for night operations.

Both projects aim to enhance mobility and economic activity in Peru’s interior regions.
