Peru warns of severe 'Niño Costero' impact on fishing
Peru's Minister of Production, Juan Carlos Requejo Alemán, has warned of the potential impacts of a severe 'Niño Costero' on the nation's fishing activities. During a Senate commission meeting, Requejo noted that oceanographic anomalies are being closely monitored by IMARPE to track evolving conditions.
The effects of rising sea temperatures are already being observed in both industrial anchoveta fishing and various artisanal fishing sectors, with the latter showing a decrease in landings. To mitigate these impacts, the Ministry of Production has issued 19 fishing management measures and is preparing an emergency declaration for the fishing and aquaculture sectors. This declaration would allow for special mechanisms, such as differentiated debt treatment, to support affected fishermen and producers.
