Peru declares emergency as heavy rains cause flooding and infrastructure damage

Severe rainfall and the meteorological phenomenon 'Dana Aníbal' have caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage across Peru, particularly in Lima and southern regions. In Lima Sur, districts such as Villa El Salvador and Chorrillos have reported hundreds of affected residents, dozens of damaged homes, and several impacted schools. The flooding was exacerbated by a collapse in the sewage system, prompting President Keiko Fujimori to announce a restructuring of the state water utility, Sedapal, to address long-standing structural failures.

In response to the crisis, the government plans to declare a state of emergency in the most affected districts and regions. To support the agricultural sector facing El Niño-related risks, S/ 800 million will be allocated. In the south, heavy rains and landslides have paralyzed transport on the Panamericana Sur highway between Atico and Ocoña, leaving numerous vehicles stranded. Additionally, the Tacna International Airport was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather forecasts suggest continued precipitation and temperature fluctuations across the coast.
