Peru weighs humanitarian pardon for ex‑president Alejandro Toledo

Former first lady Eliane Karp has urged the incoming Peruvian president to grant a humanitarian pardon to her husband, former president Alejandro Toledo, who is serving a 20‑year sentence for aggravated collusion and money‑laundering. Criminal lawyer Luis Gutiérrez Oliva explained that a humanitarian pardon requires a final, enforceable sentence and no pending cases; Toledo’s ongoing appeals and additional money‑laundering prosecution mean those conditions are not yet met. The lawyer also noted that any health‑based pardon must be verified by official medical assessments from INPE, EsSalud or the Ministry of Health.

Presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori said any pardon request will be evaluated “according to the law” and without political privilege, adding that a commission on presidential clemency will review cases individually. She emphasized that the process must respect the dignity of the person seeking relief.
