Peru wins 19 medals at Pan American Youth Chess Festival
The Peruvian national delegation achieved significant success at the XXXVI Pan American Youth Chess Festival, held in Medellín, Colombia, from July 26 to August 2, 2026. The team secured a total of 19 medals, consisting of 11 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze, placing Peru third in the overall country rankings among competitors from nations including Brazil, Canada, and the United States.
Among the standout performers was 10-year-old Lhuanna Jauregui, who won gold in the sub-10 standard and rapid categories, as well as a bronze in blitz. Other notable individual achievements included Fabiana Gómez, who earned three medals in the sub-18 category (gold in blitz, silver in rapid, and bronze in standard), and Irina Rojas, who took gold in rapid and silver in standard for the sub-14 category.
A significant portion of the success was attributed to students from the Saco Oliveros school, who contributed 15 of the 19 medals won by the national team.
