Perugia Court of Appeal adopts AI guidelines for judicial use

The Prosecutor General's Office at the Court of Appeal of Perugia has adopted new district guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in judicial activities. The framework establishes that while AI can assist magistrates in tasks such as analyzing case files, conducting jurisprudential research, reviewing documents, and examining wiretaps, it cannot replace human judgment or decision-making.

The guidelines aim to transition from a traditional office to an ‘augmented intelligence office,’ leveraging technology to increase efficiency while maintaining constitutional principles. This initiative builds on research and projects started in 2022, including the ‘Banca Dati di Merito’ and tools used to assist in drafting European Arrest Warrants.

The document aligns with recommendations from the Superior Council of the Magistracy and considers recent technological developments, such as the experimentation with Microsoft 365 Copilot within the Ministry of Justice. Existing applications in the district include the ‘Prosecutor’s Dashboard,’ which originated as an experimental tool in Umbria before becoming a stable instrument for the Ministry.
